The summer of 2016 had me conducting in St. Louis, Philadelphia and a hometown show in Los Angeles performing at the Microsoft theater. In the meantime, I was writing “Requiem” a long-form orchestral work commissioned by the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra. The piece portrayed my own grief journey from losing my brother Luke Benchasil when I was 17. I honored his memory with 7 movements inspired by various stages of grief, performed by the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra with soprano Holly Sedillos and mezzo Cindy O’Connor at The Montalban theater in the heart of Hollywood. It was the most daring, terrifying and vulnerable experience I’ve ever had as an artist.
